Pull Together Linux Development Documentation

Printer-friendly version
There's a lot of Linux documentation out there; some maintained, some not. The question is, what's the best way to bring it all under one virtual roof?

Pull Together Linux

Reminds me good old days, where all the documentations used to be at comps.*nix, tldp.org and my fav. man pages. With the internet growing faster and linux reaching everywhere. The no of blogs, wikis, todo manuals of the both upstream and downstream projects, not to mention the LUG's in the remote corners of the world. Getting it all under one roof might be a herculean task.

  • Something like a carefully structured, community driven, del.icio.us kinda application where people can categorise, author and review the URLS and Link. Indexed Documentaion.

Existing vs. new documentation

I think the task here is twofold:

  • integrating existing documentation (not necessarily in physical sense - what we need is to be able to quickly find and reach a document, the exact location is not so important)
  • creating new documentation for things that are not yet documented, or their documentation is long unmaintained.

For new documentation, I believe it is crucial to make the process of writing documentation as open (so everyone who knows some information can share it easily and quickly) and extremely easy (because most people in the community don't have time to use complex documentation writing tools). That's why I like wiki concept so much - it allows non-professionals to participate with ease. Things like DocBook are very useful for writing books, but not for collaborative development.
